The story of Pittsboro, North Carolina began in 1771, when Chatham County split off from Orange County and a new courthouse was built near the area that the town would later occupy. A tract of land was purchased, and the new county seat was planned and built. Initially, Pittsboro consisted of 25 lots surrounding a public square, but taverns, merchants, and inns soon sprouted up around the square. The square itself was the town's social center, where court cases were decided for a lively audience, performers busked, and traveling salesmen plied their wares. The square became the site of the courthouse in 1881, when a new, Classical Revival-style courthouse was built for the then substantial sum of $10,600. That same courthouse still stands today, anchoring modern-day Pittsboro's historic district. And while this charming little town has grown a bit over the years, it has done so at a slower pace than some of the neighboring cities of the Piedmont, with the town's residents currently numbering just shy of 4,000. Pittsboro citizens love their town's mild climate, the spirit of mutual respect there, and the strength of its community. The town is a mere 32 miles from Raleigh, 25 miles from Research Triangle Park, and 17 miles from Chapel Hill. It's also a short drive away from Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, where visitors can enjoy swimming, boating, and camping.
